Building a network to develop your career
Building a network to develop your career A network, an association of individuals having a common interest, formed to provide mutual assistance. In the context of a career, the ability to develop and maintain networks is a valuable skill that can create opportunities and provide the insight to inform your career decisions. You may not even be aware of this, but you will already have a network. It consists of former employers you may have worked for, colleagues, friends and family. You will also potentially develop a diverse network at university with a variety of other students, building relationships that may prove to be mutually beneficial during your career . Networks can be effective if you adopt a proactive and professional approach to developing these connections even more so if you have clear objectives and realistic expectations. University of Warwick alumni Nalini Adele Pinto describes how the network she built through her determination and resilience created a valuable work experience opportunity. As a student keen to make the most of my experience at Warwick, I decided to explore beyond the campus map and found my way to the Venture Centre. I introduced myself to a member of the reception staff, explaining why I had come to Warwick and the course I was pursuing, and asked him whether he could tell me more about the Centre. He referred me to the Project Manager from the Business Support Services whilst waiting for him I noticed a board with the different companies housed and the range was phenomenal! I expressed an interest in a part-time job to enhance my experience at Warwick. He was quite impressed as he mentioned that I was one out of 23,000 students who made their way to the Science Park and showed interest in the work going on there. He handed over his business card and asked me to get back to him over the Easter Holidays for a work experience opportunity. I decided to keep in touch with him, firstly thanking him for taking the time out to meet me and also updating him over the Spring term about my progress with my business modules of my Biotechnology, Bioprocessing and Business Management course. I understood from various workshops at the Student Careers and Skills Service that employers seek students with enthusiasm. I decided build my profile and soon achieved the Warwick Skills Portfolio Award. As Spring term was nearing, I decided to learn more about the different Science Park companies through their websites and short-listed a few I was keen to learn more about. It proved difficult to meet the Project Manager during term time so I decided to approach my personal tutor and ask her about the companies. She realised that our Head of Department (HoD) knew someone from one of the companies! I kept meeting up with the HoD over the next few weeks, showing him my eagerness to gain work experience, and he indicted that my proactive nature would definitely get me far. He soon managed to set up a meeting for me with Director of a leading molecular pathology lab for a potential internship in Autumn, after I finished my dissertation. That was the best lead! I was still keen however on getting some experience before Autumn, so in the meantime I kept the Project Manager updated on my progress in my business modules and my eagerness to gain experience in the Science Park. As I approached the Easter vacation and nearly losing hope, I received an email him indicating that he had been seeking clearance from HR and the University to take me on a voluntary work experience project with the Business Support Services! I am glad to say that I successfully completed a 4-week work internship. Whats more, after completing the internship the Project Manager had interacted with the Director that I had met earlier and recommended me. Before I reached my dissertation defense I was offered a full-time lab position the networking had led a to positive and unexpected outcome! When I reflect on my experience of developing a network, perseverance and enthusiasm were very important factors in my success. Moreover, tailoring your skills to the different areas that are open to you can enable employers to match your skill set and see potential for you in their work space. It may not be the most relevant experience in terms of your ultimate career goal but any experience is valuable because the skills you can gain are so transferable. The contacts in your network may also give you guidance on how to seek further opportunities and may introduce and recommend you to other professionals in their networks. And this is the best way to get started on expanding your network!

Take the pressure off the process of choosing a career
Take the pressure off the process of choosing a career Most of us will change careers. Most young people will change careers at least three times after they find one, when they are thirty. So work life is really about a series of careers, and we all need to get good at the process of choosing a new career. We all need to get comfortable with the inherent uncertainty during the process. Here are nine ways you can make choosing a career less stressful: 1. Squash perfectionist tendencies and get comfortable in gray areas. Its fine to be lost and not sure what youre doing, so dont rush yourself to solve the problem. Maybe you can just look at the problem differently, and it wont look so bad. And, dont feel like you need to get the right answer in your hunt for the right career. Being right is not important. Just do your best and see what comes of it. 2. Dont wait for a new career to start being creative. Every job is creative. Every job presents problems that need solving, and problem solving is a creative act. If what you mean by creativity is that you want to paint with watercolors, then go home at night and do that. Why do you need to get paid to make art? Its enjoyable and fulfilling and a fine thing to do in your free time, even if you have only fifteen minutes of free time a day. Raymond Carver is famous for writing short, short stories because he didnt have enough time in the day to write long. 3. Stop looking for a career to save your life. A job is not a life. A job is something to do with your time that is rewarding and fosters personal growth. A career cant make you happy. Relationships will make you happy. Figure out what you can get from a career and what you cant. Once you recognize that you will rescue you, not your career, theres a lot less pressure in the career hunt realm. 4. Relax about the career choices you make. Try something. If you dont like it, try another thing. There are not rules that say you have to stay in the career you choose. In fact, moving from one career to another at a breakneck pace til you love something might be good for you, and taking ten years to figure something out is fine. The life or death decision is about living below your means. As long as you do this, you have lots of choices in life. If you dont live below your means, you get stuck in a career. 5. Dont wait until you know yourself. You never really know yourself. Its a process. If its a precondition for finding a career, then you could be learning about yourself forever and never feel ready to choose a career. Forget the soul-search and just try something. Ironically, the best way to learn about yourself is to do things and see if you like them, so the inactive, soul-searching time is, in some ways, counter-productive. Try testing the waters with a lot of lower risk moves, instead. 6. Stop choosing dead-end fields. All things being equal, youre better off choosing a career in a field that is growing, not shrinking. Once you identify your talents, focus them on a field that has a future. If you write well, go into interactive marketing one of the fastest growing fields and not print journalism, which is in trouble. If you like to help people, go into nursing huge demand, and not centralized, slow-moving nonprofits, which are falling out of favor with donors. 7. Dont overlook the good points of the job you have. You can save the world from almost any job, you can shift from a dead end to a hot spot in almost any field, and you can learn and grow if you get good at managing your boss. These are all things you can control. You dont need a specific career to accomplish these things. So maybe you dont even need to pick a new career. 8. Make a lifestyle choice before you make a career choice. Figure out what you want your life to look like, and then choose a career that will enable that life. If you dont know what you want from life, how can you possibly know what you want from a career? What we want from life might change. Thats okay. You have to start somewhere. So figure out what you want, and an try out careers that might give you that. If you change what you want from life, you can change your career. 9. Talk about yourself the way you want to be. To figure out what sort of career will suit you, try talking about yourself like youre already there and see how it feels. We intuitively know what stories feel right, and we can make a career change more efficiently if we create stories about our process. You might actually surprise yourself by figuring out what you want to do by figuring out what story seems natural to tell.

Tips For Writing a Resume Format
Tips For Writing a Resume FormatWhen you have a resume to send out, one of the most important things that you should do is to take the time to learn how to properly format it. The format that you choose can have a huge impact on whether or not your resume gets a second look or a denial. As long as the formatting is correct, it will help your resume have the same impact that a well-written letter has. To this end, here are some tips that can help you with the format of your resume. Using these will give you an edge when it comes to making your resume stand out from the rest. When you have finished the first draft of your resume, you should make sure that it is grammatically correct. Do not hesitate to check it for grammar errors, especially on certain sentences and in particular areas. Grammatical errors can easily be overlooked, but they will make your resume look bad and can turn a good resume into a terrible one. This is something that cannot be stressed enough, and you should pay att ention to it from the beginning. One thing that can help to get rid of any grammatical or sentence structure problems is to write from the point of view of the reader. If the writer writes from the perspective of the reader, then he will be writing the truth. This is important because it will make the reader think twice about the accuracy of the resume before reading it.It is also important to look at the layout of the resume before you start filling it out. As you go through your resume, take note of the layout and if possible, look for any mistakes. There is no point in having a perfectly formatted resume only to find that one word was misspelled on it or that the paragraph didn't flow correctly. Taking the time to look over your resume before it is sent out is a great way to avoid any mistakes that could have been caused by sloppy drafting. There are some jobs that do not require you to write on resumes, such as conference call or telesales roles. These types of jobs are best form atted as voice mails or other similar voice mail options. If you are submitting a resume for these types of jobs, you should make sure that the resume is formatted as a voice mail and that the formatting is correct. It will ensure that your resume has the best chance of being read. When you are sending your resume out, you should keep in mind that the longer it is, the better it will look. You should also take into account how much room is left on the page when you are formatting your resume. An extra sentence or two will really make a big difference. In the end, learning how to properly format a resume will help you not only in terms of getting your resume reviewed, but it will help you have a resume that can stand out in an interview. Taking the time to make sure that you have done this will help you have a professional looking resume. Do not procrastinate; take the time to learn how to properly format a resume and have a successful career ahead of you.

10 Tips To Overcoming Your Career Hurdles - CareerAlley
10 Tips To Overcoming Your Career Hurdles - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Whats holding you back from your dream career? A lack of opportunities? Too much competition? What if the thing holding you back is you? We can all suffer from a lack of confidence or a low self-esteem, but its important to overcome it to ensure we reach our goals. Here are some tips for overcoming your career hurdles. 1. Get more experience A lack of experience is something that will often hold people back from applying for a new role or is the feedback received from recruiters. Rather than dwelling on the fact that you dont have the right experience, set out to get it. Most employers will want to retain their staff through growth and development, making shadowing opportunities an appealing option for both sides. Ask your manager for the chance to shadow someone elses role for weeks or even a few days here and there as a way to develop some more experience and show your willingness to advance in your role. Asking to be involved in other projects or even volunteering for charities can be a great way to get that vital experience to help you reach the next step of the ladder. 2. Set yourself goals According to John Assaraf of NeuroGym, setting goals for yourself can benefit your aspirations, and you must mentally train yourself to reach them. Through affirmations, meditation, and other techniques, you can visualize your goals much clearer and make them achievable. Its important to have long-term and short-term goals, with the overall goals providing the path, but the short-term goals breaking them up into more manageable strides. This great motivational video offers further information on goal setting and why its important offering perfect inspiration to get started. 3. Broaden your search Its easy to say that theres nothing out there, but how hard have you looked? According to Forbes magazine, only 20% of jobs are actually listed. This means that internet searches for jobs on sites such as LinkedIn and Indeed may not yield the results youre looking for. Networking is a far better way of finding out more about upcoming opportunities and getting your name out there with potential employers. Networking doesnt necessarily mean going to industry events and swapping business cards around a room; you could also speak to family members, friends and those within your existing network about any up and coming roles they know of. Image Source: Pexels 4. Dont become stuck in a rut If you took an entry-level role to get your foot in the door, then youve already made a positive step towards getting your dream role. What happens to many people, however, is that they become stuck in this role, not knowing how to progress to the next level. If you know someone who has a role that would be of interest to you, ask them what they did to get there, what experience they needed and so on. Ask to work with them on different projects or tasks to broaden your skillset to help you meet the job description for your next role. Put in the extra hours if you need to so that your current workload doesnt suffer, and make it clear to your employers that youre looking to take the next step in your career. 5. Get the credit you deserve Theres a lot that can be said for modesty, but with many workplaces being a competitive environment, sometimes its important that you speak up and get the recognition you deserve. This doesnt mean bragging loudly across the office about your achievements, as thats not a good way to find favor with your colleagues. Instead, self-evaluate your work regularly. If you work on a project basis evaluate each project with what went well, what could have been improved upon and what lessons were learned. Share this with your manager. Evaluation is a key part of many businesses today to ensure continued growth and improvement and offers you the ideal opportunity to showcase the work youve been doing. Asking for regular feedback with line managers is another way to regularly communicate your achievements without having to shout loudly. 6. Start getting involved Do you typically shy away from colleague lunches, dinners and social events? Are you an active part of your workplaces community? If not, this could be holding you back. Those who get involved in the company through more than just work show a bigger commitment to their employer and are more likely to be noticed as they spend more personal time with colleagues. Not everyone is a fan of after-work drinks, and thats ok why not suggest some alternative activities more suited to your interests and invite everyone along. When your colleagues go for lunch, make sure you go with them, and take the time to ask them questions about things other than work. This can be one of the most challenging hurdles to overcome if youre shy or lack self-confidence, but is one that can really pay off if you give it a try. 7. Improve your interview skills A job interview is one of the most uncomfortable experiences a person can go through. They can make you stressed and nervous and if your interview skills arent up to scratch, might not project the best representation of why youre right for the job. There is a lot of advice available to you online to help with your interview skills including different tips and practice techniques that can help you to improve your confidence and break down the barriers that may be stopping you from presenting yourself well in front of an interview panel. Its important not to feel too dejected if an interview doesnt go your way, treat each one as another excuse for a practice and improve in time for your next one. Image Source: Pexels 8. Address unfairness and inequality Are you often treated unfairly in your job? Expected to do things that arent in your description or face discrimination/inequality at the hands of colleagues? Its important that you address it. Despite many improvements in the workplace, unacceptable behavior still exists which is unfair for both you and your other colleagues who may be facing the same treatment. You HR representative is there should you need to address inappropriate behavior and should be able to come to an effective resolution that will improve your working conditions. Its not always an easy process, but getting the right advice about approaching unfair treatment at work will be a huge step in the right direction. If a suitable resolution cant be reached, you may need to consult an employment lawyer who can tell you what your position is as well as take any necessary action. 9. Know when its time to move on If youve been with your company for a while and the opportunities arent there, or youre not being valued as you deserve, perhaps its time to move on. The culture of working for one company and staying until retirement is now long gone, and many people will work with multiple organizations across their lifetime. It can be difficult to accept that its time to try somewhere else but you have to go where the opportunities are. You can speak to headhunters about possible opportunities to help you find the right role as well as really take your time to search for the right job. If time isnt an issue and you dont need to leave your role immediately, wait until the right opportunity comes along rather than settling for a so-so job that gets you out of there quicker. Time is on your side, and you can plot your next move carefully to make sure that youre happier in the long run. 10. Dont be afraid to change careers Many people will get stuck in a job they hate, believing that nobody ever really likes their job, but thats not true. If you could have any dream job, what would it be? If the answer is reasonable (space cowboy may be a bit of a stretch), work out if its actually achievable and work out the path to getting there. You may need to re-train or go back to college, but theres no reason why you cant do these things. Flexible learning means you can do courses in the evenings or even gain qualifications through your current workplace without losing your income. Be sure to avoid the pitfalls of changing careers and remember to speak to those whove been there before its rare to hear of someone whose life hasnt changed for the better after changing careers. Theres more to life than a job, but when you spend 8+ hours a day in it, its important to find something thats right for you. Whatever your career ambitions, make sure you identify the hurdles that are stopping you from getting there and overcome them. Your dream job isnt going to be handed to you on a plate, so its up to you to take steps to achieve your goals and make the best decisions for you. What's next? Ready to take action? What To Do After A Bad Interview
What To Do After A Bad Interview It has happened to all of us. Everyone has experienced a bad job interview sometime in the past. Anything from being late, botching answers to key questions or not being able to show knowledge about the company. Although the proverb is true, you never get a second chance to make a first impression, you do have an opportunity to make up some of what you lost in your bad job interview. Often, people are their own worst critics, but this can actually be a good thing. When it comes to a job interview, you might be seeing things that werenât actually there, or at least, that werenât nearly as bad as you perceived them to be. Try to put the interview into perspective. Obviously, things like arriving late are negatives that will count against you but maybe other issues could be worse. Did you stumble through some questions? Did you fail to impress your interviewer with your knowledge of the company? Are there several things that were on the tip of your tongue that you were never able to express? Answer these questions and youâll be able to tell yourself whether the interview was as bad as you first thought. Think of it this way. Maybe that job was not the right one for you anyway. Did you feel like you werenât able to connect with the interviewer? Did you feel out of place in the office? Were the questions exceedingly simple and not a challenge to you? Sometimes our instincts will show us in subtle ways when something is not right. If youâve decided that you did do very badly in the interview but still want the job, you can do damage control. The first thing to do is to analyze what went wrong. Write a thank you note or recovery letter. This is a way to follow up your bad job interview with concrete examples to back up your less than stellar answers to the interview questions. This is your chance to set the record straight and take back the initiative. Put together a concise, hard-hitting letter, using verifiable facts to back up your case wherever you can. When your prospective employer receives the letter, they will know, even if you didnât show it in the interview, that you very much want the job and further, that youâre uniquely qualified for it. There are any number of reasons why you can have a bad job interview. Often, itâs not as bad as you thought, or the interview will have given you enough of a perspective to convince you that the job wasnt for you after all. But if you have a bad job interview for a job you really want, writing a timely, fact-filled and enthusiastic recovery letter can show the employer yet again that you are the best person for the job.
